Scottish Children’s Teeth Better Than Ever

The Scottish government has announced that children today have the best dental health since records began. Around 70% of children have no sign of tooth decay, which is better than the government set target of 60%.

Children in Scotland today have the best dental health since records began, the Scottish government has said.

Almost 70% of P7 pupils have no obvious sign of tooth decay, beating a 60% target previously set by ministers.

The figures were released as part of a report by the National Dental Inspection Programme.

At the same time, Scotland’s chief dentist urged parents to ensure their children stuck to a good tooth-brushing routine.

The Scottish government also said dental registration figures were at a record high, with an extra 1.36 million people registering with an NHS dentist since March 2007, bringing the total to almost four million as of September 30.

Public Health Minister Michael Matheson, said: “It is important to make sure that we maintain this good oral health record over Christmas and New Year, and as we move into 2012.”

Record Numbers Sign Up To NHS Dentists in Scotland

In Scotland, a record number of people are registered with NHS dentists. Around three quarters of adults in Scotland are now registered.

A record number of Scots are registered with an NHS dentist, new figures have revealed.

Just over three quarters of the adult population have an NHS dentist, with statistics from September showing 75.6% had registered. And for children the proportion is higher, at 86.1%.

The figures mean a total of 3,053,394 adults and 893,563 children are now registered with a dentist. The Scottish Government said that meant an extra 1.36 million people had registered with an NHS dentist since March 2007.

Other figures showed the dental health of Scotland’s youngsters was improving, with an increase in the number of primary seven pupils with no obvious signs of tooth decay. A total of 69.4% of all primary seven pupils had no signs of tooth decay in 2011 – up from 52.9% in 2005.

For the the first time all of Scotland’s health boards met the target set for 2010 of having 60% of these youngsters with no obvious decay to their teeth.
